President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the late National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Zanele Ka Magwaza-Msibi a special category 2 funeral.

Magwaza- Msibi (59) was a deputy minister for the department of Science and Technology under the Zuma administration.

She passed away from cardiac arrest on Monday at the Umhlanga Hospital, north of Durban.

In 2011, she formed the NFP after breaking away from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and subsequently contested in the local government elections.

KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala has welcomed the gesture by the president.

"We thank the president for agreeing to offer the honourable Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi a provincial official funeral, this is important, it is an honour to her contribution and services she has made in the country but in particular in the people of Kwa Zulu Natal."

She will be laid to rest on Saturday in Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
