Ramaphosa: I have answered Scopa on ANC campaign funds question

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed he has sent a letter to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) explaining his remarks on the misuse of public funds to campaign for ANC leadership positions.

Parliament’s watchdog wrote to Ramaphosa last month asking him to account for a clip that made rounds on social media where he can be heard admitting to being aware of public funds being used for political campaigns in the build-up to the Nasrec elective conference in 2017.

The complaint comes after suspended ANC MP Mervyn Dirks wrote to the chairperson of Scopa, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, requesting the committee to hold Ramaphosa to account.

Scopa has since said it wants a written explanation from Ramaphosa about the allegations.

Although the authenticity of the clip has not yet been tested or confirmed, its contents have since been a subject of fierce debate.

The Office of the Public Protector has also confirmed receiving a complaint on the same matter.

Ramaphosa told journalists at the post -SONA Presidential Golf Day at the Atlantic Golf Club in Cape Town that he has signed the letter from Scopa.

“Well, I have signed the letter I don’t know where it is now. I signed it and it must be somewhere in the pipeline. This things take a long time to happen because there is a pipeline and there is a chain of things that need to happen so yes, I have signed the letter.”

The president told journalists that further questions will be answered in a dedicated debate on Tuesday.
