The African National Congress (ANC) ‘Top Six’ addressed the media on the party's approach to the coronavirus in Tshwane on Monday.

The address came after an extended national working committee (NWC) meeting earlier in the day.

Ramaphosa said the newly established coronavirus national command council will be discuss ways to prevent and contain the virus in informal settlements and taxi ranks.

“This is one of our areas of greatest concern. The apartheid spacial architecture has bequeathed us with a flawed transport system.

“A transport system that forces our people to utilize it in large numbers. This is an area that we could face enormous challenges. The national command council is going to be looking very closely at how address the challenge that is bound to come when the outbreak begins to go in a number of places where many of people either live or get transported,” Ramaphosa says.

He adds that the government has been a phenomenal job in controlling the outbreak thus far.

“We’ve got things under control. We think we acted at the right time as government and as this virus continues to spread we will be upping our game.

“And I want to reiterate that our colleagues who are in the health sector, working in government, are doing a fantastic job raising awareness amongst our people but also in making sure that we are better prepared.

“As we move forward we will be continuing to be better prepared for the effects of the virus.”
