The organisation wants Ramaphosa to uphold the rights of South Africans with the same vigour as the country has shown in defending the rights of the Palestinian people.

Ramaphosa will deliver his 8th State of the Nation Address in Cape Town on Thursday.

Amnesty International South Africa's Executive Director Sheila Mohamed said 30 years into democracy; many people are still awaiting essential services.

"South Africa will be celebrating 30 years since the first free elections in the country, and yet many people are still waiting for basic services such as water, quality healthcare, quality education, and adequate housing. This shows us that access to basic human rights has fallen by the wayside.”

Mohamed said Ramaphosa must not politicise his State of the Nation Address.

“In an election year, we urge against politicking and instead emphasise the importance of genuine commitment to human rights and social justice. We are tired of lip service.”
