Ramaphosa has described those attacking Gordhan for his testimony at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry, as a circle embedded in the country’s corruption.

"Our task is to support and defend people like Pravin Gordhan, and a number of others are going to come to the fore. We should stand behind them because what they want to do is to get rid of corruption in our country," said Ramaphosa.

He addressed the South Africa Jewish Board of Deputies on Sunday evening, where Gordhan was also in attendance.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leaders have made various public remarks against Gordhan during his appearance at the commission last week.

The party’s leader, Julius Malema, has accused Gordhan of having secret bank accounts in Canada and using his daughter to loot state owned companies by means of tenders.

The party’s deputy president Floyd Shivambu told a crowd of supporters outside the commission, that the EFF will remove Gordhan from the government.

"The same way we removed Jacob Zuma, in the same way we removed Nhlanhla Nene, you are next, we are going to remove you," said Shivambu.

President Ramaphosa said as a country, South Africa has been going through a cathartic moment as the State Capture Commission of Inquiry reveals the depth of corruption under former President Jacob Zuma regime.

"What we are finding is quite horrific, quite a lot of it was playout openly by the media and a number of people who have been very brave."
