Ramaphosa the reason for Maimane's resignation - Malema

Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema believes President Cyril Ramaphosa should be blamed for the resignation of former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane.

Malema claims the DA's funders gave Maimane an ultimatum to work with Ramaphosa but he refused.

Malema was speaking at Nasrec on Monday, where the party’s leadership were doing a site visit ahead of their elective conference in December.

Malema said the day Maimane wrote to Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, asking her to probe the R500 000 donation to Ramaphosa’s CR17 campaign from Bosasa, his fate was sealed.

He said he knows this because some of the DA funders had told the EFF they would get funding only if they worked with Ramaphosa. However, the EFF also refused.

"Look at what Cyril did to Maimane. All of you are saying Helen Zille, Helen Zille. It is not Helen Zille, it is Cyril.

"The day Maimane wrote a letter and the public protector found against Cyril, Helen came out saying that was the most stupid thing to write and Tony Leon also came out saying the same. That is where the problems for Maimane started."

Malema believes Miamane and outgoing Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba - who tendered his resignation last week Monday - attempted to defy instructions to work with the president.

"They are being told: 'Work with this man. This is our man’. And Mmusi defied them. He thought he had life of his own, and they showed him who are the real owners.

"Go check the names in the e-mails of who funded CR17 and go compare notes with who is funding the DA. It is the same people. They told us to work with Cyril, and we told them it is not going to happen."
