Moyane set the president a deadline of 4 pm on Friday to respond to his letter in which he demanded that Ramaphosa halt one of the two inquiries into tax administration and his alleged misconduct.

Moyane’s lawyer Eric Mabuza says they are pleased with the president’s response.

"We will obviously be consulting with Mr Moyane regarding the contents of the president's letter. His full reaction to the letter will be communicated in the next day or two.

"We are still consulting with Mr Moyane and it will be inappropriate for us to comment on the content of the letter until we have consulted with him."

On Monday Judge Robert Nugent, who heads up the inquiry into tax administration at Sars, dismissed Moyane's application that the commission be discontinued, pending the outcome of his disciplinary hearing.

Moyane's legal representative, Advocate Dali Mpofu, also requested that all evidence from the inquiry be expunged, the recusal of Professor Michael Katz and that Sars provide legal assistance to Moyane.

"I have made it clear that to Mr Moyane’s counsel that the commission does not intend holding further public hearings before August. If this is a precursor to court proceedings, then I am confident he will bring the attention of the court.

"All the rulings and relief sought by Mr Moyane are refused," said Nugent.
