During his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February, the President announced the plan to establish a unit to assist with the increasing number of cases emanating from, among others, the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

The Scorpions, which was similar to the new unit, was formally disbanded in 2008 following a resolution by the ruling party.

President Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Khusela Diko says the unit will work with the Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Diko says this has been done based on the recommendation of the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, the Minister of Police, and the NPA head, Shamiela Batohi and gives it investigative and prosecutorial authority.

“This is going to go a long way to ensure that the revelations that are coming from the Zondo Commission, Nugent Commission, as well as Mpati Commission into the PIC are thoroughly investigated," said Diko.
