Ramaphosa spoke in Kigali on Sunday, during the 30th commemoration of the Rwanda genocide that claimed lives of over 800 000 people in 1994.

Rwanda is accused of sponsoring rebel groups fighting against the DRC government forces.

South Africa has deployed thousands of troops in the eastern DRC as part of international peace mission under the Southern African Development Communities.

Ramaphosa said the SADC countries want to silence the guns in the continent.

"All of us, including SADC, should work towards installing peace in this area, so that the conflicts and the violent conflicts, the displacement of people in DRC and Rwanda should come to an end, so that there should be peace and silence the guns in this part of our continent."

Ramaphosa also used the occasion to reference the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

"It is because of our stated commitment to never again allow atrocities of this kind, that the world cannot stand idly by as another genocide is carried out, this time against the people of Palestine in the besieged Gaza Strip.

"Nobody can claim ignorance about what is happening in Gaza, because, unlike in Rwanda in 1994, these atrocities are being televised, written about, tweeted and live streamed.

"It is now close to six months since Israel unleashed a campaign of violence on the people of Gaza in response to the atrocities committed by Hamas."
