President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to clean up state-owned enterprises.
Ramaphosa made the remarks at the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre in Chatsworth on Saturday where he addressed scores of residents.
The meeting was part the African National Congress' (ANC) Thuma Mina campaign.
Ramaphosa acknowledged that Public Enterprise’s Minister Pravin Gordhan inherited a mess when he took over the portfolio earlier this year.
Ramaphosa said government wants to deliver a South Africa that will give people a better life.
"Right now we are going through serious economic challenges. High fuel prices, the rand-dollar exchange rate not being in our favour, a technical recession, slowed economic growth. How however hope our agricultural sector improves and performs better so that it gives us the boost that our country needs."
Ramaphosa amitted that SOEs need to be revamped.
"We have to revamp our state-owned enterprises. Pravin Gordhan has his job cut out for him. He has inherited one of the biggest mess one can imagine. He has though put his shoulder to the wheel and is cleaning up and making sure we have the SOEs that we want in our country."
