Ramaphosa will face more attacks ahead of ANC conference - analyst

A political analyst says he believes the criminal complaint laid against President Cyril Ramaphosa by former spy boss Arthur Fraser is nothing more  than a political game.

Fraser has laid charges of money laundering, kidnapping and corruption against Ramaphosa in connection with the alleged theft of R62 million from the head of state’s farm in 2020.

Fraser's contract as correctional services commissioner contract came to an end earlier this year.

Ramaphosa has denied any wrongdoing.

At the same time a group of Marikana miners and their families have launched a civil case against Ramaphosa and Sibanye-Stillwater.

The case was heard in the High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday.

They are demanding an unconditional apology from the president for a letter he wrote to Lonmin, as the company was known then, urging action againt striking miners in 2012.

Political analyst Theo Venter says he is not sure the case will succeed, as the president was not in a position to make executive decisions.

"Mr Ramaphosa was a non-executive director of Lonmin, who couldn't influence the day-to-day operations. He wrote a letter, and that letter is being debated in court, but this issue will stick to him but will not get very far."

He expects Ramaphosa to face more political attacks in the lead-up to the ANC’s national conference in December.

"What we are going to see is that more people trying to attack, the battle for leadership will be for other five positions.

"I hope that he will respond quicker to issues, as he did today, and not let them linger for long in public in future."
