Ramokgopa details Eskom plans to reduce demand
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Electricity Minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa says his department has devised a plan to reduce electricity demand by at least 1000 MW.
Ramokgopa briefed the media from Cape Town on Friday to provide an update on efforts to solve the energy crisis.
He said the plans include the charging of batteries and inverters at night, and also not immediately when load sheddings ends.
"It is about setting inverters and batteries to charge from the grid during the night. Part of the problem we have is a surge in demand when the lights come back on after load shedding.
"So what people do is that they consume what they consume and simultaneously they charge the back-up solution. We are asking them not to charge it at that time, but at night."

Ramokgopa added that the department is currently working with the cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg.
He believes the initiative could save the municipalities at least 370 MW each.
"City Power thinks they can claw back about 370 MW. The City of Cape Town will be doing the same. We are also doing other provinces," Ramokgopa said.
