Ramokgopa hints at ‘policy interventions’ to stave off massive Eskom tariff hike
Updated | By Bulletin
Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has hinted at a possible policy intervention to prevent a massive electricity tariff hike.
Eskom has asked the energy regulator for a 36% hike in the 2026 financial year.
Public submissions on the tariff hike are open until 1 November.
Speaking at the Standard Bank climate summit in Johannesburg, Ramokgopa stated that suspending certain government policies could provide relief, particularly for low-income households.
“We are working on an integrated energy plan that has three levers. You’ve got the integrated resource plan that has gone out for public comment. What are the costs associated with the choices that we will be making? So that at the end of the day, we will be able to make determinations that are in the interests of the country.
“We must find policy levers to protect the poor. We'll make that announcement. I'm confident we'll find each other with regards to what is possible going into the future,” Ramakgopa said.
