Ramokgopa pledges transparency amid pause in nuclear build programme
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Minister of Energy and Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced on Friday that South Africa's nuclear energy plans will undergo additional public consultation.

In a media briefing, the minister confirmed the withdrawal of a previous gazette on the nuclear build programme to allow for more public input, address legal challenges, and enhance transparency.
According to Ramokgopa, the revised process will involve expanded public input to ensure greater accountability in the procurement of the 2,500 megawatts nuclear programme.
Ramokgopa said the revision aims to address previous concerns about secrecy and to ensure that the procurement process is open.
“The last thing we want is to do a major build project on the back of suspicion that the department and the government is hiding something from the public. We are going to democratise this process and make it transparent because we have nothing to hide.
“On the basis of that, I have taken the decision to withdraw the gazette to allow for public participation.”
