Rand Water denies aging infrastructure led to ‘explosion’
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Rand Water has denied claims that aging infrastructure led to the explosion at the Palmiet booster station in Alberton.
An explosion at the water pump station on Sunday led to supply interruptions in parts of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
The water entity has managed to restore supply to most areas of the province by Thursday.
"The explosion was not as a result of low maintenance or aging infrastructure," says Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale.
"The explosion just happened, just like pipelines it can explode. It caught us by surprise, and what we are working on is to make sure we replace them.
"We replaced one motor on Monday, as of yesterday we have replaced a second one and we will replace the third, as we have given ourselves until Sunday.”
