Rand Water has announced that it is "implementing restrictions to various areas in our network to bring down the demand" for water.

According to the water utility, "this is aimed at ensuring equitable supply and system stability."

This comes as a number of provinces brace themselves for another heatwave this weekend, and Eskom says the electricity supply in South Africa is still "constrained and vulnerable."

This week, the Department of Water and Sanitation moved to allay fears of a water crisis in Gauteng, saying while the Vaal dam levels have dipped below 50% and no water is being pumped from the Lesotho Highlands Scheme due to ongoing maintenance work, "the system is able to give us sufficient water."
