The DA's Solly Msimanga says Rand Water has been withholding information regarding the extent and severity of the water scarcity crisis, preventing residents from being adequately prepared.

The three metros in Gauteng have been experiencing erratic water supply over the past month.

On Sunday, the water utility announced the implementation of water shifting in the province, in a bid to ensure sufficient water supply to residents.

Water shifting is a process where water would be shifted from one system to another to ensure a balanced and equitable supply of water.

Msimanga says Rand Water must account for the water crisis.

"Municipalities struggle to plan adequately, and ensure water delivery to their residents, all because Rand Water is unable to communicate effectively.

"We are not in any way absolving municipalities of their contributory role in the mess, but we are asking for a complete and transparent supply of information from the source - Rand Water," he said.

But Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says the entity is not involved in politics.

"Rand Water's preference is and has always been to engage with all its stakeholders in a constructive dialogue to find mutually beneficial solutions.

"We therefore remind all stakeholders, including political parties that should they wish to conduct an oversight visit to Rand Water, they must follow the legislative and regulatory framework governing oversights visits."
