Rea Vaya bus operations remain suspended
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Rea Vaya speed bus service in Johannesburg was again suspended on Wednesday morning following the killing of two bus drivers in Soweto on Monday evening.

On Tuesday, Member of the City of Johannesburg’s Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Kenny Kunene, assured commuters that buses would be back on the roads on Wednesday morning.
However, his office said on social media on Wednesday morning that the service is still suspended and commuters have been urged to use alternative means of public transport.
Speaking to SABC News on Tuesday, Kunene said the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) have drawn up a plan to ensure drivers’ safety.
"JMPD has committed that they are putting together a plan today (Tuesday) so that they can be able to then escort the buses and go to strategic BRT stations. But this is a declaration of war against the residents of Soweto, against the government of local unity, and against provincial and national government.
"This is a serious declaration of war, and we must respond in the same way as government to what has happened here."
The drivers were killed behind the steering wheel of the buses in the two separate incidents.
"On the first incident, it is reported that the driver had stopped at a robot along Wildchestnut street in Protea when he was shot and killed by unknown suspects", said police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
"On the second incident at Tshithuthune Street, the eyewitness reported that he was the last passenger on the bus when he heard gunshots and took cover. After it got quiet, he realised that the driver was shot, he tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. The driver was declared dead on the scene and the passenger sustained no injuries.
"In both incidents, the motive is unknown at this stage and police investigations continue."
