Recommendations of Zondo report must be implemented, says Cosatu

Trade union federation Cosatu has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to ensure the full implementation of the recommendations in the report of the state capture commission.

The report, which was released by the commission’s chair Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo earlier this week, recommended criminal charges against some of the implicated parties.

The report further urged the formation of a new body to help fight corruption and prioritise the protection of whistleblowers.

Cosatu president Zingiswa Losi says a failure to implement the recommendations would be a waste of taxpayers’ money.

She was delivering a message of support in Polokwane at the ANC’s birthday celebrations.

“We welcome the release of the first part of the Zondo commission into state capture. We are also saying as a federation we don't want to see this Zondo commission report becoming like the Seriti commission on the arms deal, because almost R1 billion was spent on the Zondo commission.

“Just printing the report they have spent R1.5 million, which is taxpayers’ money. The recommendations must be implemented with no failure.”

Losi told ANC supporters that while workers in Limpopo love the party, they are concerned about corruption.

“We have spent the past week visiting workers across this province Limpopo, as part of the build-up to today’s celebrations. We have listened to workers, the message is clear, workers love the African National Congress.

“Equally, workers are angered by corruption, workers are angered by municipal workers who are not paid their salaries, workers are angered by some shop stewards who have been assassinated in Vhembe for exposing corruption and not their murderers not having been brought to book.

“Workers are angered by potholes that are never fixed, load shedding and 46% of unemployment. Workers want us to listen and fix South Africa.”
