The Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) says the search and recovery operation at the Ennerdale landfill site will continue Saturday morning.
The operation started on Thursday after a collapse at the landfill site, trapping a number of people.
On Friday, EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that a body of a waste picker was recovered while the rescue workers managed to rescue two other people who were still alive on Thursday afternoon.
"One was unharmed and another one was injured.
“The injured one was transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further medical care," says Mulaudzi.
“It is alleged that there were a number of waste pickers on site.
“At this stage we don't know the exact number of the waste pickers who were around the area when the incident occured.
Several people were still reported missing," he added.
Mulaudzi says members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) K-9 unit will join the operation.
