Remains of SA struggle stalwarts to be repatriated from Zimbabwe, Zambia: Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile says the remains of several South African struggle stalwarts will be repatriated from Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Mashatile says this is part of the government’s efforts to bring closure to the families of the fallen heroes and show respect for their sacrifice for the country’s freedom.
Several anti-apartheid activists were exiled from South Africa by the apartheid government, and some died before they could return.
Others chose to stay abroad as they had started families.
On Tuesday, Mashatile delivered the keynote address at the Heritage Day commemoration at the Meqheleng Stadium in Ficksburg, in the Free State.
“Compatriots, as a nation, we should engrave the names of our struggle heroes in our hearts and teach new generations about their contribution to our nation as a way of reminding ourselves that our freedom was not free.
“We will honour those who have fallen outside of our country’s borders. A homecoming ceremony will take place starting tomorrow (Wednesday), but on the 27th of September, we will have a big event where President Ramaphosa will officially receive the repatriated remains from Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“Among the remains to be repatriated to South Africa are those of struggle stalwarts Duma Nokwe, Florence Mophosho and Basil February.”
Mashatile emphasised the importance of unity while respecting each other’s differences.
“If we preserve intangible cultural heritage, we will be able to maintain our integrity, values, and respect for one another as a nation.
“We call on all our stakeholders, families, NGOs, traditional leaders, interfaith leaders, educational institutions, businesses, as well as the media to play a role in the promotion and protection of our intangible cultural heritage.
“Languages are amongst the most important aspects of our intangible heritage that we should protect. We should speak our languages proudly and openly so that we can promote them. We should also learn each other’s languages,” added Mashatile.
