Remembering Tat'Mandela through his own words
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
People from all around the globe joined South Africans on Thursday in celebrating what would have been former president Nelson Mandela’s 101st birthday.
Nelson Mandela Day is a time to reflect on Mandela's legacy and to help those who in need.
Many people across South Africa will be putting in their 67 minutes of volunteer work throughout the day.
Another legacy Tat' Mandela left the world are his quotes, which hold value even today.
On holding the governing party accountable:
"If the ANC does to you what the Apartheid government did to you, then you must do to the ANC what you did to the Apartheid government." - Nelson Mandela, Cosatu Conference, 1993.
On education:
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it."
On race:
"No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
On respecting basic human rights:
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
A classic Madiba quote:
"It always seems impossible, until it is done."
