Renewed protests in Westbury
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Protests have flared up in Westbury, west of Johannesburg, again on Tuesday morning.
Community members are said to be angry over the release of two suspects, who were initially arrested for the killing of a 45-year-old woman in September.
The woman was walking with her 10-year-old son when she was hit by a stray bullet and fatally killed.
"We got a tip off yesterday that the community of Westbury will be starting a protest this (Tuesday) morning.
"Police were deployed earlier on and the community went out to the street and met with the police. It was a group of people who started to burn tyres, but police managed to remove them and open the route," says Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele.
Police will continue engaging the community.
Two suspects arrested in connection of the murder of the woman, have been released by police.
This is after no sufficient evidence was found against them.
"Remember when we made the arrests, we arrested a number of people and some of those people who were arrested were released, but they feel they aren't happy about it. That is why they are protesting".
"They are saying that there are people who were released from court and who were arrested for a murder case previously so that is what is making them angry to barricade the road," adds Makhubele.
The situation in Westbury is still tense and police are keeping a close eye on the area.
