Report: Selebi died with little money in the bank

According to his will, date stamped February this year, Selebi had R66 in Sanlam shares, R536 in a Nedbank Greenbacks account and R796 in a Nedbank current account.

His Waterkloof home, household furniture, valued at R60 000, as well as a BMW valued at R350 000 are also listed.

Selebi died in January this year at the age of 64.  At the time, he had been released on medical parole while serving a 15-year-sentence for corruption.

Legal costs

According to the Sunday Times, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko said last month that the recovery of legal costs from the estate was still “under consideration”.

Selebi's defence lawyer, Wynanda Coetzee, confirmed to the Sunday newspaper that she had received payment in relation to his high court case – although she said she had not sought payment for his appeal case.

The former head of Interpol was found guilty of corruption in 2010. He was convicted of having taken bribes from a convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti.

Selebi was released on medical parole from Pretoria Central Prison after serving less than a year of his sentence, reportedly suffering from diabetes and kidney problems.

In 2013, a report emerged in City Press that, at the time, Selebi owed legal fees of R17.4 million.

At the time of his death, the ANC said it would pay for his funeral and memorial service.

In February, the National Prosecuting Authority would not comment on why an investigation into prosecutors working on the Selebi case has dragged on for two years.

During his unsuccessful appeal application, Selebi had insisted there was a conspiracy against him. Former president Thabo Mbeki also publicly questioned the NPA's investigation of Selebi.
