According to police spokesperson, Brigadier, Mathapelo Peters, around 400 community members took to the streets from around 1:30 this morning.

"At this stage our members are there. We are told that there is a burning vehicle on the R57 between Olifantsfontein and Tembisa," she says.

Peters adds that the group has been dispersed while the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) as well as public order police are on the scene to clear the road.

"We are urging motorists to drive with caution when using the R21 freeway. The freeway has not been closed," she says.

The motive for the protest is unknown but Peters says members of the SAPS will remain on scene to keep an eye on the situation.

"We are yet to confirm the reason for the protest but we believe the illegal protest was staged by a group of community members from a nearby informal settlement," Peters says.
