Authorities in the mining town of Jagersfontein in the Free State began evacuating residents on Sunday morning after a mine dam burst.
Houses and cars were swept away by a strong stream of water in the Kopanong Local fter the mine dam burst on Sunday morning.
Province’s disaster management spokesperson Mark Butler says several roads have also been washed away, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach the scene.
“The whole town is basically affected, there is a whole lot of people that are missing so we are waiting for the water to subside so we can go and see what is happening.
“All cell phone towers in the area have been washed away, so there is no communication, and the normal route has been closed down as it is flooded so we have to take an alternative route via Pietersburg to get to Jagersfontein.”
