Restaurant industry wants an end to level 3 lockdown
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Restaurants Association of South Africa (Rasa) has urgently called for the government to further ease lockdown restrictions.
The country is currently under adjusted level 3 with tighter restrictions on restaurants, gyms, and fitness centres.
These establishments can operate with a maximum of 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors but must close by 9pm.
Alcohol is also sold for on-site and off-site consumption but only from Monday to Thursday.
Rasa CEO, Wendy Alberts says the industry wants President Cyril Ramaphosa and his newly appointed cabinet to consult and review restrictions.
“Despite several and ongoing pleas for relief and compensation, the South African government, the Cabinet, and the Minister of Tourism has failed to assist the requests for debt deferment for Restaurants,” says Alberts.

“We will continue to call on the relief of loans and leases. We are still sitting with a vast amount of our staff on unpaid layoffs with no immediate relief from TERS,” says Alberts.
“We have highlighted the number of restaurants that have closed and the hardship and suffering the restrictions have financially caused our industry alongside thousands who have lost their jobs.”
