In October last year, the SABC said it was insolvent and had no choice to embark on a retrenchment process to avoid a financial collapse.

The public broadcaster had planned to retrench around 1,000 permanent employees as well as 1,200 freelancers.

SABC spokesperson Neo Momodu said the broadcaster has not been able to make a decision on the retrenchments due to the resignation of four board members towards the end of last year.

"The SABC board has not met recently to suspend the suspension. Four board members resigned at the end of last year which rendered this current board inquorate and therefore couldn't make a decision.

"Since the resignation of the board members last year the board has not met.”

The decision to put the retrenchments on hold has been communicated to staff members, said Momodu.

"We shouldn't cause confusion in the communication space. The SABC is clear about its stance we communicated to staff and organised labour that we will be putting section 189 process [retrenchments] in abeyance.

"Until such time we come back to them, we have not done so, its still in abeyance."

Momodu said there will be various consultation with different stakeholders but it is difficult to say when the process would start.
