Revoke all permits to move alcohol - EFF

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called on the government to revoke all permits which allow for the movement of alcohol during the lockdown.

This comes after police impounded five trucks belonging to South African Breweries (SAB) for transporting alcohol – something which is not allowed during the national lockdown.

The company has denied that the trucks were in contravention of the regulations, saying it was permitted to move the alcohol to an off-site storage facility.

But EFF spokesperson Delisile Ngwenya believes SAB put lives of workers at risk for a service that is not essential.

"Provisions to them for permits to conduct this movement of alcohol should be revoked and the employers who put the lives of workers at risk for the movement of alcohol products must be investigated.”

The party also expressed concern over the export of wine during the lockdown, saying this will only benefit the Rupert family.

"To allow them to continue to export and profit from wine while many other industries have come to halt is an expression of how great the capture this lobby has over our government," says Ngwenya.

The trucks were pulled off the road during two separate Covid-19 operations. They were found to be transporting alcohol, which is not permitted during the 21-day lockdown period. The company's Syreeta van Rooyensays the trucks were moving the alcohol to an off-site storage facility as the warehouse was packed to capacity.
