The man, who made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, is suspected of being part of a gang of 12 that attacked two couples as they took a stroll inside Rhodes Park in Kensington, east of Johannesburg in October.

The gang tied the men up, threw them into the lake and left them to drown. The gang then raped one of the women. The other woman managed to get away before they could get to her.

Earlier in November police arrested a second suspect in Yeovil, Johannesburg. Police said the 22-year-old suspect was a Zimbabwe national.

On Tuesday before the case was adjourned Dumisani Mabunda, the lawyer for the 24-year-old accused said he was abandoning his client’s bail bid because his address could not be verified.

When the double murder and rape trial resumes both suspects will be expected to appear. Both men remain in custody.

Police are still probing the matter and they are confident they will find and arrest the rest of the gang. - ANA
