Rhodes VC: We failed Khensani
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Students and faculty members at Rhodes University marched to the Settlers Monument in Makhanda on Tuesday to mourn the death of Khensani Maseko.
Twenty-three-year-old Maseko was a 3rd year BA student at the university.
It is believed she struggled with depression following an alleged rape.
She took her own life on Friday at a family home, in Alberton, east of Johannesburg.
The university's Vice-Chancellor Sizwe Mabizela described Maseko as a gallant spirit who did not deserve to die.
"Khensani did not deserve to have her beautiful life terminated manner as it was.”
Addressing scores of mourners, Mabizela said society has failed Maseko.
"The manner in which we have brought by our boys and young men has led to the tragedy that has fallen Khensani."
He added that women are always told to behave in public spaces, however, society fails to educate men that they have no right over women’s bodies.
