Riots erupt in Harare
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Transport operators in Harare embarked on protest action on
Monday against police who they say take money from them.
Zimbabwean correspondent Zenzele Ndebele said commuters were left stranded while transport operators were blocking roads and preventing them from getting into private vehicles.
"The transport operators say they are not making any money as police demand their money for all sorts of reasons," he said.
Ndebele said civil servants are also planning to down tools on Tuesday.
"Civil servants are also planning to strike tomorrow, because their salaries were not paid on time. The government says it will pay them on 14 July for their June salaries" he said.
Ndebele says the government is under pressure to deliver and the situation is likely to spread to other areas.
"WhatsApp messages are circulating that Tuesday is a total shutdown and children must not go to schools, shops must close and people must not go to work," he said.
At the Beitbridge border post, protests continue over Zimbabwe's new regulation to ban various imports.
