Rising inflation down to VAT and suger tax, says Stats SA
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The consumer price inflation (CPI) for July rose to 5.1% in July, Statistics South Africa announced on Wednesday.
This is up from 4.6% in June and the highest since September last year.
Stats SA says rising consumer inflation is a clear indication that consumers are now feeling the pinch of the sugar tax and VAT increases.
"Cold beverages registered an annual inflation of 8.1% with bottled fizzy drinks increasing by 2.7% from last month alone.
"The average price of a 1L bottle was R14, 33 in July this year, compared to R12.99 in July last year. This is an increase of 10.3%."
"A 330ml can cost R9,79 in July this year, compared to R8.69 in July last year, that is an increase of 12.7%," Stats SA said.
The price of fuel also contributed to the rise in inflation.
