Road Freight Association: Govt must deal with truckers ‘who see themselves as above the law’
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Road Freight Association (RFA) has slammed Friday morning’s blockade on the N3 – urging government to arrest the truck drivers blocking the highway.
The RFA says the time has come to act against the truckers who are holding the industry hostage.
Truck drivers blocked the N3 highway linking Gauteng with KwaZulu-Natal in the vicinity of Van Reenen’s Pass.
All lanes have been closed since Friday morning.
Road Freight Association CEO Gavin Kelly says this has a massive impact on the transport and logistics industry.
“Law-abiding transporters are subjected to this. The Road Freight Association has called on government, again and again, to do what is necessary. They must deal with those who see themselves above the law - arrest, detain and investigate the inciters, those who perpetrate these acts, and those who take it upon themselves to act like police or authorities of the state.”
Kelly says the police must intervene.
“Those employers who continue to break the law, are not registered with the various authorities as required by various legislative prescripts or continue to employ individuals at rates below the minimums, must be dealt with.
The SAPS must intervene and take action - not stand on the sidelines and ‘monitor’. We are fast losing any respect as a safe, efficient and desirable route for the movement of goods out of, and into, Africa - and even South Africa.”
