Colonel Jay Naicker said a woman, 28, was waiting for transport between Nyala and Ntuzuma Access roads when she was accosted by three unknown men on Wednesday

“They threatened her with a firearm and robbed her of her belongings before fleeing on foot,” Naicker said.

He said the victim screamed for help, an off-duty police officer heard her and came to her rescue.

“Two of the men continued to flee, however, one man attacked the police officer with a screwdriver when confronted. After he refused to comply with the police officer’s instructions to stop the attack, the police officer fired a shot towards him.”

Naicker said the suspect, 23, was shot in the leg and was taken to hospital, where he remains under police guard.

“And will be charged for armed robbery, then appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court as soon as he is released from hospital,” he said.

Police were on the trail of the two suspects who were still at large, said Naicker. -ANA
