The ANC's secretary-general Gwede Mantashe described the meeting with party veterans as 'robust'.

"We were happy with the meeting. It was candid and open. Difficult at times but important for the health of the ANC, moving forward," Mantashe said.

Speaking after the meeting in Irene, Mantashe said the parties have agreed on a follow-up meeting before the end of the year.

Mantashe said the meeting was a success, but there are too many issues to be discussed in one day.

One of the issues, namely the veterans' call for a special national conference, is still on the table.

Stalwart Wally Serato said that the call for President Zuma to go was made by individuals in their personal capacity.

"We have agreed that we will be guided by the culture and traditions of the ANC. There were difficult moments in the meeting but we will address them," Serato said.

Serato says while President Zuma position was not discussed at the meeting, there were some robust and frank exchanges.
