Role of traditional healers to be defined, promises Mkhize
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has met with traditional healers, who expressed concern over a lack of recognition by government during the coronavirus pandemic.
The healers are also unhappy at the fact that they are not recognized as essential services providers.
"They presented to me that there are many citizens who consult with them and rely on their traditional herbs and remedies for their ailments,” says Mkhize.
"Since the lockdown, these THPs (traditional health practitioners) have since not been able to provide these herbal remedies to their patients.”
Mkhize says government has agreed to better define the role of traditional healers during the lockdown period.
"The THPs and I agreed that there must be an ongoing channel of communication with the department for proper coordination and information sharing, that will assist in this fight against the COVID-19 virus," he says.
