A member of the notorious Rolex gang was killed in a shootout with Gauteng police during an attempted robbery in Sandton on Sunday.
A second suspect was arrested after police responded to a shooting at a hotel in Sandhurst.
It is alleged that two armed men, believed to be part of the so-called Rolex Gang, approached a businessman’s vehicle and tried to rob him of his watch.
The businessman’s two bodyguards opened fire on the suspects and a shootout ensued.
“The suspects tried to flee the scene but one fell from a gunshot wound on the scene while the other one was found nearby with a fatal gunshot wound. The injured suspect is currently under police guard in hospital,” said police spokesperson Brenda Muridili.
“The suspects’ vehicle and their unlicensed firearm have been seized by the police.
“The bodyguards’ two licensed firearms have also been seized. All the firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing by the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory.”
A case of attempted robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm is being investigated.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
