The distinctive multi-coloured homes on steeply cobbled roads came about following the scrapping of a rule which barred the slaves living in them in the 1760s from painting it any other colour than white.
When the rule was lifted and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties they were all painted in bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
Many of the families in the Bo-Kaap have been living there for generations.
