RTMC expecting a busy day on the roads, calls for patience

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is expecting a very busy day on the country's roads, as holiday makers return home from their Easter weekend destinations.

The RTMC's spokesperson Simon Zwane says traffic is expected to peak at over 2500 vehicles per hour on the N3 and the N1 into Gauteng later today.

"It's going to be very busy and we are urging people to exercise patience, and not to rush to be the first person to arrive home. Also to work with other motorists to ensure that everyone can get home safely and resume work tomorrow, and the kids can get to bed safely."

Zwane says despite some horror crashes over the weekend, including a bus crash in KwaZulu-Natal that claimed the lives of 15 people, the RTMC is relatively satisfied with the way things have gone.

"On the major routes carrying the bulk of the traffic, there have not been any big incidents. But there have been incidents on the more rural roads. Considering that there have been more than 200 000 vehicles on the roads, the incidents have not been many.

But still we are not satisfied that people are dying on the roads. We think it is preventable. We think if everybody played their role we could reduce these numbers of people that are dying."

Zwane says they are still collating the number of fatalities on the roads over the Easter weekend.
