SA confirms extradition request for Bushiri

Malawi has confirmed the receipt of South Africa’s extradition request in a bid to bring back self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri and his wife Mary.

The Malawian government confirmed the receipt of the request on Friday.

Bushiri, who was on trial for fraud and money-laundering, breached his bail condition when he mysteriously fled the country for his homeland in November.

Department of Justice spokesperson Chrispin Phiri says Malawi has confirmed the receipt of the extradition request.

“The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, confirms that the extradition request for Mr. and Mrs. Bushiri has been duly served in terms of Article 6 of the SADC Protocol on extradition as well Article 10 of the extradition agreement between the government of Malawi and Republic of South Africa.”

“As previously indicated, the law provides for this extradition request to be submitted for 30 days. However, through (Justice Minister) Ronald Lamola’s word, this extradition has been brought within a period of two weeks.”

Phiri believes Malawi will honour the extradition request.

“The submission follows a request for a provisional arrest which was sent through the International Criminal Police Organisation in terms of Article 10 of the SADC Protocol. We note that this has been appealed by the fugitives. We are closely monitoring appeal processes by the Malawian authorities.

“Minister Lamola believes that given our sound and healthy diplomatic relations and strategic political relationship, and our common citizenship of the SADC community, we are convinced that the Republic of Malawi will honour the letter in spirit of every provision of the international law and written law applications.”
