SA Covid-19 infections 'indicative of new wave'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A public health expert says the latest spike we have seen in Covid-19 infections shows has breached the levels that are indicative of a new coronavirus wave.
"Not all the parameters or metrics have been breached, but the most indicative ones have been breached, which means that we really need to take the rising cases seriously to activate our responses," says the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Professor Mosa Moshabela.
New cases in South Africa shot up by more than 50% in the past 24 hour period.
Almost 10 000 new infections were recorded on Thursday.
Moshabela says this needs a serious response.
"I think that sometimes it is paralysing to keep giving the public an impression that we are not yet in a wave when there is so much spread of infections.
"As far as I am concerned, it is important for people to understand that we are in a new wave."
