SA ‘genocide’ case against Israel about ICJ itself - Pandor

Minister of International Relations Naledi Pandor says South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has placed a spotlight on the function of the court.

The UN’s top court is the only international court that adjudicates general disputes between nations and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues.

South Africa lodged an application with the ICJ last month, arguing that Israel was violating the UN Convention on Genocide and seeking urgent measures to protect Palestinians in Gaza.

At a two-day hearing this month, South Africa asked that the ICJ grant interim injunctions, including that Israel immediately cease its military operations in Gaza.

Pandor and the South African delegation are at the Hauge to hear the ICJ's provisional judgement on its genocidal case against Israel.

Pandor says despite the court outcome, South Africa's case has achieved a much bigger purpose.

"I think what South Africa has done has brought attention to the existence of these institutions

"I think many people who are repeating the three letters ICJ, were not aware of them until this case was brought by South Africa.

"But most importantly, we are saying to these institutions, we are not giving you an opportunity to actually do a task for which you were assigned, a task that I think sometimes has not being upheld sufficiently.

'So succeed or fail, the real analysis or judgment is going to be on the court itself.”
