SA govt hits jackpot with millions worth of pledges

The Department of Health and the police have received a large consignment of personal protective equipment from various companies as part of the country’s fight against Covid-19.

Ithuba Holdings chairman Seth Phalatse pledged 100 000 reusable face masks.
The health department received 80 000 masks, while the police were given 20 000 masks.
Bank of China CEO Gao Yingxin also pledged 100 000 masks, protective clothing and 5 ventilators.
Mara Phones donated 500 smartphones for service workers and challenged other businesses to also make pledges.
Engen made a sizeable donation of R1 million.
Police Minister Bheki Cele stood up on behalf of both departments to thank the various companies.

“I can’t really measure the excitement we are having as the South African Police.
“As I’m coming here to receive this beautiful gesture that will help many members of the South African police.”
Cele also revealed that 205 men and women in blue had been infected with Covid-19.
“This will help also especially at roadblocks.”
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize also rose to share a few words.
“All that we are seeing today is a commitment and a dedication to helping our people and we are thankful for that.”
