SA loses renowned scientist to Covid-19

World-renowned researcher and virologist Professor Gita Ramjee has been named as one of the five people in South Africa who havedied because of complications related to Covid-19.

Ramjee passed away in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital on Tuesday.
The South African Medical Research Council's Alfred Thutloa, where Ramjee worked, says the organisation is still processing her death.
She was a world-renowned HIV prevention and treatment scientist
"Professor Ramjee firmly believed in health as a fundamental human right and her groundbreaking research in HIV prevention contributed so much in the global response to HIV and Aids. We wouldn't be where we are in HIV research if it was not for her contribution," says the Aurum Institute’s Kanya Ndaki.
In an email to staff, the medical research council CEO Professor Glenda Gray said the organization was deeply saddened by Ramjee's death and sent condolences to her family.
