SA losing fight against crime under Cele, says Steenhuisen

DA leader John Steenhuisen says the country is losing the battle against crime under the political leadership of Police Minister Bheki Cele.

Steenhuisen’s remarks come on the back of a petition launched by the official opposition, urging President Cyril Ramaphosa to axe Cele.
The petition has already garnered more than 4 000 signatures.
Steenhuisen, who was speaking during the party’s Mandela Day campaign in Mitchells Plain in Cape Town on Monday, said crime statistics have risen during Cele’s time at the ministry.
“We have a petition called #CeleMustFall and I urge people to sign it, because we need a police minster that is focused in getting rid of crime not social media and hats, telling people to ‘shut up’,” said Steenhuisen, referring to Cele’s recent altercation with anti-crime activist Ian Cameron at a community meeting in Gugulethu.
“Every metric to fight against crime under Bheki Cele has gone backwards. We have fewer detectives now, gangsterism is going up and gender-based violence figures are worsened.
“The national police service is falling apart.”
