He said that the country's hard-fought Constitution was supposed to be our signpost, telling us where to go and when to go.

Pikoli was the guest speaker at a business breakfast in Port Elizabeth on Thursday morning, hosted by law firm BLC Attorneys.

The former prosecution's boss told guests that the Constitution recognised the injustices of the past and sought to heal the wounds.

"Our preamble further recognises all those who made it possible for us to be able to adopt it in 1996. It further appreciates our diversity and joining us to derive strength from that diversity. To have unity within that diversity. It basically talks about social cohesion and all of us being mobilised behind a common vision, which is our Constitution," Pikoli said.

Talking about corruption in response to a question, advocate Pikoli said while one talks about corruption in the public service, there was a tendency to turn a blind eye to corruption in the private sector.

"Our focus needs to be both on the private sector as well as the public sector, because if we want to speak of anti-competition practices - what is there - the question of collusion at a construction company, this is corruption. Where the law has been clearly broken, we need the political will to be able to deal with corruption, irrespective of who is responsible for it."
