SA reaches one million mark in Covid-19 vaccine campaign

One million South Africans have now been vaccinated under the Sisonke protocol and the second phase of government’s mass vaccination campaign.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that 1 045 104 individuals have been vaccinated.
Under the Sisonke protocol, 479 768 individuals and mostly healthcare workers have been vaccinated, while 565 336 people have received the first of their two Pfizer jabs.
“Today it is my pleasure to announce that we have breached the million mark and have vaccinated 1 045 104 individuals. I wish to thank all the those involved in the vaccination campaign, from the Director-General of Health to each and every vaccinator continuing to battle it out for the nation in
the frontline. We will continue to ramp up daily vaccinations, working together with the private sector, towards attaining the targets we have committed to as government,” said Mkhize.
Meanwhile, the country’s Covid-19 cases now stand at 1 669 231, with 3 614 new cases identified in the last 24 hours.
A further 95 people have died from Covid-19 related complications.
Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West recorded zero fatalities.
Eastern Cape recorded 3 related deaths, KwaZulu-Natal 5, Western Cape 9, Northern Cape 7 Free State 27 and Gauteng 44.
This brings the country’s death toll to 56 601.
“Provinces are continuing with their mortality audits and some dates have been back-captured from previous months. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased patients,” says Mkhize.
The country’s recovery rate stands at 93,7%
