SA records another drop in new Covid-19 cases

The number of new Covid-19 infections in South Africa has seen another significant drop, falling to below the 4 000 mark in the 24 hours up to Sunday evening.

The country recorded 3 961 new Covid-19 cases – bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 858 195.


The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says the current surge seems to be showing signs of a sustained downward trend.


The latest increase represents an 11.0% positivity rate.


A further 126 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 84 877.


KwaZulu-Natal is still the epicentre with 1 105 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.


“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (28%), followed by Eastern Cape (20%).


Western Cape accounted for 18%; Northern Cape accounted for 9%; Free State & Gauteng Province each accounted for 8% respectively; Mpumalanga & North West each accounted for 4%, and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” 


There has been an increase of 92 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.


Currently, 10 440 people are receiving treatment in both public and private facilities.
