SA sees an uptick in positive Covid-19 cases

South Africa has recorded 22, 910 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours as the country continues to battle the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The latest cases bring the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases in the country to date to 2, 135, 246.
Gauteng is still the leading province with a whopping 11,747 new infections reported in the last 24 hour period.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says the increase represents a 30.4% positivity rate.
The government is expected to make a decision this weekend on whether to extend restrictions under level four of the lockdown.
A further 460 Covid19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 63 499 to date.
The institute says there has been an increase of 711 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
A total of 15,709 people are currently admitted to both private and public facilities for Covid-related illnesses.
On the vaccine front, 191,833 jabs have been administered in the last 24 hours.
So far 4,017, 442 vaccines have been administered throughout the country.
